Welcome to Buzzard Class
We’re so excited to start a brand-new school year together and can’t wait to dive into lots of exciting learning! Below, you’ll find an overview of what we’ll be covering across different subjects so you can support your child at home.
This year, your child will explore a range of exciting stories, including ‘The Dragon Who Goes to School’, ‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth’, ‘The Jolly Postman’, ‘The Tiny Seed’, ‘The Tiger Who Came for Tea’, and ‘The Gruffalo’. They will practise building simple sentences, orally composing ideas, and sequencing sentences to create short stories.
Children will develop handwriting and spelling skills, use capital letters and full stops, and explore language features such as verbs, adjectives, onomatopoeia, and similes. They will also learn to join sentences with ‘and’, write questions and exclamations, and include plurals and verbs ending in -ing or -ed.
Through Level 5 phonics, children will continue learning new sounds and practising spelling patterns using games, interactive activities, and hands-on practice to become confident readers and writers.
Supporting learning at home:
Each Friday, children will bring home resources to support learning, including a spelling bookmark, a parent guide sheet, and a storybook connected to the week’s sounds.
This year, your child will build confidence with numbers and problem-solving through practical and fun activities. They will learn to count, read, and write numbers to 100, understand tens and ones, and compare and order numbers.
Children will practise addition and subtraction using number bonds and simple word problems, and begin exploring multiplication and division through grouping and sharing. They will also learn about fractions, measuring length, weight, and capacity, telling the time to the hour and half-hour, and recognising 2D and 3D shapes.
Children will develop skills in position, direction, and movement, and use their maths knowledge to solve problems and explain their thinking.
Supporting learning at home:
Encourage counting, simple sums, and exploring shapes, measurements, and time in everyday activities. Talking through how they worked something out helps build confidence and understanding.
PE Day: Wednesday – please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit.
Outdoor Learning: Friday – children will take part in outdoor activities, so they should come in their PE kit and bring a coat and suitable boots. Boots can be left at school if needed.
Reading is at the heart of everything we do. Children are encouraged to read at least five times at home each week, and reading logs are checked daily. Regular reading helps children build vocabulary, improve comprehension, and develop a love of books. If reading isn’t completed at home, children will have the opportunity to catch up during break or lunchtime.
Staying in Touch ✉️
If you have any questions or concerns, please do come and see a member of staff at the door. For non-urgent matters, I kindly ask that you send an email, and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
For more details about what we’ll be learning, please take a look at our Class Curriculum Map on the school’s curriculum page.
We can’t wait for a fantastic term full of learning, creativity, and fun! 🌟
Writing
Using story maps, actions and role-play, children learn a wide variety of stories and text types using these as a basis to create their own! In Buzzard class, we immerse children in a text to help them with their writing.
There are high expectations for the children in terms of content and presentation. Correct letter formation is key to this in order to aid writing fluency and stamina.

Twinkl Phonics

Twinkl Phonics is a DfE validated full systematic, synthetic phonics programme that allows us to deliver phonics teaching to children from the very beginning of learning to read and write, to full fluency.
