Welcome to Buzzard Class
Welcome to the Autumn Term! 🍂
We’re so excited to start a brand-new school year together and can’t wait to dive into lots of exciting learning this term! Below, you’ll find an overview of what we’ll be covering across different subjects so you can support your child at home.
English 📚
This half term, we’ll be using the wonderful books ‘The Dragon Who Goes to School’ and ‘How to wash a woolly mammoth’ to kick-start our learning. We’ll be focusing on building confidence with simple sentences and orally composing our ideas before writing them down.
Handwriting will be a big focus for our school this year. At the start of term, we’ll work on letter formation and sizing, paying close attention to the difference between upper- and lower-case letters to help children develop a neat, confident writing style.
This term, we’ll continue following the Twinkl Phonics programme, moving on to Level 5 sounds and words. Children will explore different sound families and learn when to use each one. Some sounds will already be familiar, while others will be new and exciting! To make learning engaging, we’ll use fun games, interactive activities, and hands-on practice, ensuring that every child can work at their own level and feel confident as they develop their reading and spelling skills.
Each Friday, children will bring home a few resources to support learning at home:
A spelling pattern bookmark
A parent guide sheet
A storybook connected to the week’s sounds
These tools are designed to make learning enjoyable and consistent between school and home.
Maths ➗➕
This term, we’ll start by developing a solid understanding of place value, helping children see the value of each digit in a number. We’ll also refresh key number facts they’ve learned before through Merlin Maths and other fun number fluency activities. Alongside this, we’ll be looking at arithmetic, building confidence with addition and subtraction, to give every child a strong and confident start to the year.
PE & Outdoor Learning 🏃♀️🌿
PE Day: Wednesday – please make sure children come to school wearing their PE kits.
Reading 📖
Reading is at the heart of everything we do. As a school, we ask that children read at least five times at home each week, and we’ll check reading diaries every Monday. Regular reading helps children build vocabulary, improve comprehension, and develop a love of books. If reading isn’t completed at home, children will have the opportunity to catch up during a break or lunchtime.
Staying in Touch ✉️
If you have any questions or concerns, please do come and see a member of staff at the door. For non-urgent matters, I kindly ask that you send an email, and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
For more details about what we’ll be learning, please take a look at our Class Curriculum Map on the school’s curriculum page.
We can’t wait for a fantastic term full of learning, creativity, and fun! 🌟
Writing
Using story maps, actions and role-play, children learn a wide variety of stories and text types using these as a basis to create their own! In Buzzard class, we immerse children in a text to help them with their writing.
There are high expectations for the children in terms of content and presentation. Correct letter formation is key to this in order to aid writing fluency and stamina.
Twinkl Phonics
Twinkl Phonics is a DfE validated full systematic, synthetic phonics programme that allows us to deliver phonics teaching to children from the very beginning of learning to read and write, to full fluency.
Year One children will demonstrate their Phonic knowledge by undertaking a phonics screening in June. We will be working towards this throughout the year to ensure that children and confident and fluent in phonics.
In line with school guidance and staff wellbeing, emails will be responded to within 2 working days.
