Westonzoyland Primary School ‘Achieving, Learning and Growing Together’

Physical Education

Through P.E. we promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles. This subject includes games, gymnastic activities, dance, athletic activities and swimming. Swimming is a statutory element of the National Curriculum at Key Stage 2 and, therefore, no child can be excluded.

As well as developing individual skills of coordination and movement, the children play a range of team based games, which can include football, netball, tag rugby, rounders, cricket, tennis, basketball and hockey. Through these we aim to develop sportsmanship and team work.

The school takes part in various friendly and competitive fixtures with other schools in the Sedgemoor and Bridgwater area. We hold our own Sports Day, which comprises of a number of competitive events to allow individual achievement followed carousel of noncompetitive activities, in which everyone is encouraged to take part and children work for accolade and achievement for the house team.

We also host the Sedgemoor Small Schools Athletics Tournament in the summer.

In the academic  year 2018-2019, 76% of our year 6 children were able to swim confidently, competently and proficiently for a distance of 25m. They were able to use a range of strokes, and select the one they felt best suited with. They were also able to perform safe self-rescue actions such as floating, treading water and orientating themselves.
