At Westonzoyland Primary, first and foremost we aim to develop a love of Mathematics within all children. We help them to develop a sense of enjoyment and curiosity for the subject and to see the relevance of Maths in their everyday lives. We firmly believe that a high quality Maths education is essential in providing a foundation for understanding the world around them.
In Foundation and Key Stage1 we strive to ensure that Maths is taught in a way which develops a thorough understanding of all Mathematical concepts through fun approaches which include much practical work to secure understanding and provide a firm foundation.
As the children progress there is a shift towards developing mental and written calculations. In addition to this, children are supported with their understanding of how calculations work through the use of physical apparatus. We aim for all children to become fluent in the fundamentals of Maths, developing a conceptual understanding and an ability to recall and apply their knowledge. It is important that the children are able to apply their Mathematical knowledge to Science and other subjects. We therefore ensure that many opportunities are provided across the curriculum for the children to practise and apply their knowledge and skills.
Maths is taught daily throughout the school, following a structured programme of study set out in the National Curriculum 2014.
Alongside Maths lessons, the children take part in a daily ‘Morning Maths challenge’ which helps them to develop their skills of reasoning and problem solving as well as developing their skills of number, shape, measurement and data handling.
Homework tasks are set to reinforce and consolidate skills which have been taught in class. We encourage parents to play an active part in their child’s learning through supporting and extending their child through everyday tasks such as shopping, telling the time and counting.
