Session One: Wellbeing Journal and English


English- Using Phonics to Develop Vocabulary About Exploring

Play the Simple Sounds mini game on Small Town Superheroes. Use the yellow arrows to navigate to the Sally and Percy section to find the Simple Sounds game.

Once you have familiarised yourself with the simple sounds try the activities below.


Activity 1: Matching sounds to things

Pick three sounds that were covered in the Simple Sounds mini game above.

Then go on a hunt around your home/the classroom or garden and try finding objects that start with the same sound.

Make a list of the items you find for each sound.









Activity 2: Phonics in the rainforest

Watch the short video on BBC Bitesize and then try the activity below.

1. Write down the names of some of the animals you recognised in the rainforest video:






2. Using your phonics knowledge, try writing down any words that were in the video that you have not heard before.







3. Using the list of new words you have created, quiz the people around you to see if they know the words.



Activity 3: Writing sentences about the rainforest

What can you remember about the rainforest?


Write three sentences explaining what the rainforest is and what you can find there. If you can, try using the new words you listed in the activity above. 

Remember to use capital letters and full stops correctly.


Here are some examples:

The rainforest is really hot and wet.

You can find Jaguars in the rainforest.

  • Dr. Martin Luther King was very clever. He skipped two years of school and went to university when he was 15.
  • Dr. King didn’t believe in using violence to change things. Instead, he gave powerful speeches and led peaceful protests.
  • Even so, he was arrested and sent to prison 29 times.
  • He never gave up the fight for equal rights and made a real difference.
  • In America there is a holiday called Martin Luther King Day. It takes place on a Monday close to his birthday - January 15.
