Buzzard Class (2021-2022) 🙂
Welcome to Buzzard Class
We have created this page in order to give you an overview of the routines in Year 1, together with useful information. We also intend to post photographs and examples of their fantastic work throughout the year. We hope that you will find it useful and you will enjoy seeing what the children are doing in Buzzard Class!
Our PE days are currently on Mondays and Wednesdays. We participate in a wide range of team sports and activities to encourage balance, co-ordination and movement control.
We are very passionate about the sharing of books and learning how to read here at Westonzoyland. When your child is ready, we will issue them with a reading book (suited to their ability and to encourage fluency) and do ask parents or guardians help nurture the love and enjoyment of reading by listening to your child read at least 3 times over a week. If you need any support ideas, please do not hesitate to ask a member of our class teaching team. 😃
Please take a look at our information for parents page for more details.

After an amazing week of Christmas crafts and festive fun it’s time for us to celebrate the holidays and for those who need it enjoy a well deserved rest. We hope everyone has an enjoyable time over the festive period, stay safe and we will see you all back on Tuesday 4th January. 🙂
As part of our topic work on The Egyptians, we thought it would be fun to become archaeologists. We have learnt about the famous archaeologist, Howard Carter and Tutankhamen, excavated some of our very own artefacts and created cryptic hieroglyphics clues for some of the other children to solve.
Today, in our PE lesson, we practiced our ball control skills. Throwing, bouncing and catching them with increased accuracy.
The children have been learning about the Egyptian Alphabet and how it is different to the one we use today. They each had great fun creating their very own Egyptian Hieroglyphs.
Slugs, spiders and worms.... Oh My! Look out for the mini beasts 🕷🐛🐌🐜
As part of Science Week 2021, the children have taken part in a fantastic mini beast hunt around the school grounds. The discoveries made were mind-blowing. Did you know that glow worms are not actually worms? They are female fireflies with no wings!!
Lest We Forget
The children have been making some poppy art for Remembrance Day. We spoke about the meaning behind the red and purple poppies and wrote our messages of thanks and remembrance.
In celebration of Diwali, the children have been designing their own Rangoli patterns.
The first term is done and what great fun we’ve had. We hope everyone has an amazing half term break, stay safe this Halloween and we will see you all back on Monday 1st November. 🙂
Today, Buzzards went to the park as a reward for our incredible behaviour and wonderful learning! We had lots of fun! ☺️
We LOVE outdoor learning! Buzzards have been developing lots of skills in teamwork, cooperation and problem solving, as well as having lots of fun!
Today Buzzard class have taken some inspiration from American artist, Jackson Pollock. He was a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement and widely noticed for his "drip technique" of pouring or splashing liquid paint onto a horizontal surface, enabling him to view and paint his canvases from all angles.
Look at our wonderful masterpieces!!!
Buzzard class love a bit of dough gym to strengthen our fingers and get us ready to write! Do you like our elephants? 🐘
Buzzards showed some superb skills in PE today. We used the gym equipment and displayed some interesting ways to climb mountains, cross bridges and jump and land safety. 🙂
Week 1 Maths
Some truly marvellous maths work in Buzzards this week. We have been counting and sorting various around the classroom, thinking about various ways we could sort them (similarities and differences) and discussing this in our groups.
