Westonzoyland Pre-School (Fledglings) and Reception Class (Merlin) work together closely and alongside each other to ensure children are happy, secure and make good progress in their learning and development.
We benefit from a large indoor learning environment that has a wide range of activities for the children to independently access and explore. Our large outdoor area is resourced with a splendid variety of activities for the children to explore and to learn about the natural world. Children’s interests are identified and discussed with parents/carers and incorporated into the planning and learning environment to enable the children to reach their full potential.
Our dedicated staff team are very experienced and committed to supporting children and their families while they progress on their learning journey. All Staff in Pre-School are qualified in Early Years and Paediatric First Aid; other qualifications and training include Exploring Emotional Experiences, Somerset Total Communication (STC), Food Safety, Maths Garden, Mud Kitchen experiences, E-Safety, Phonics training, Supporting Positive Behaviours, Mastery of Mathematics and Moving and Handling.
We benefit from good links with the school SENCo, Children’s Centres, local Health Visitor and other professionals. All staff have attended training about Safeguarding Children and Prevent Duty. We work with children, parents and other professionals to ensure the rights and safety of the children in our care.

The transitions for Fledglings when they progress into the Merlin class is seamless, with the Reception teacher having formed good relationships with both child and parents prior to them starting school.
