Somerset County Finals
On a chilly day (Friday 19 January) the team headed off to Strode College to take part int he Somerset FA County Finals.
The tournament showecased the best small schools talent from around the county and was never going to be an easy day.
The team included: Lucas, Ollie, Nathan, Lewi, Lewis, Jack, Scott and Dylan - once again, our trusted captain.
Our matches were against the following teams - Bishop Sutton, West Coker, Winford, Stoke St Gregory and Springmead.
A hard-fought opening match saw our team defending deep and trying to get the ball under control and string some good passes together. Although we held on for most of the match, a goal was conceded with the final kick of the game. The result: 0-1.
In our second match, it seemed deja vu as we kept the game at 0-0 for nearly the full 14 minutes but with less than 10 seconds on the clock, another goal was conceded. Once again leaving the result at 0-1.
Next, we faced a well-organised and talented Winford side who dominated despite us taking the lead with a fine goal from Dylan. The first half saw Westonzoyland perform their best passing but the second half changed the game. Confusion at the back led to 3 quick goals being scored and the end result was 1-3.
In our fourth and final match, we played well and probably should have score and even won, but the ball finding the back of the net was not meant to be. We lost both matches by the narrowest of margins: 0-1.
Nevertheless, the support for the team from the attending parents was excellent and the boys themselves never gave up hope and played with energy and passion. They were a credit to the school in terms of their spirit and fair play.
On November 20, the team were in action once again, but this against the best teams in the area.
After three tough matches, the boys triumphed and came out second place in the mini-league which was enough to take them through to the Somerset County Finals!
This is an outstanding achievement and well deserved after lots of effort from the whole team. The players were: Lucas, Nathan, Gethyn, Lewi, Jack, Scott, Ollie and Dylan (our captain).
The County Finals are in January at Strode College.
Super display of football
The Westonzoyland football team team this year come from year 5 and 6. They took part in the Bridgwater Small Schools tournament at Robert Blake College on September 25. The boys played two matches against Enmore and West Huntspill. The first match they played with lots of possession and used the ball well. They ended the match with a win (2-0).
The other match was against a good West Huntspill team. The boys deservedly took the lead but conceded shortly afterward under pressure. After a formation change at half-time, the second half was more promising with two goals for Westonzoyland leaving the match scoreline: 3-1.
Congratulations to the team for playing great football and always showing respect to each other and the opposition.
Thank you to all the parents for their support and transporting the children.
Next tournament (the small schools finals) is on November 20.
