Welcome to Buzzard Class
This page is intended to give you an overview of the routines in Year 1, together with useful information. We will also post photographs and examples of work throughout the year. We hope that you will find it useful.
Class Teacher: Mrs Bell
Mrs Deabill, Miss Gregory and Mrs Vernon
This term we are learning about battles and conflict. See our curriculum map in the link below to find out how we will be involving all curriculum areas.
Our PE day is currently Tuesday. However please make sure your child has their P.E. kits in every day in case of timetable changes. Could all clothing be clearly named also to avoid anything getting lost.
The children will be expected to read at least 3 times at home during the week. Please could you write in the name of the book and pages read and sign this in your child’s reading log. I will be collecting these in every Monday to monitor reading of the previous week. It is important that your child practises their reading at home to ensure they make good progress. A reading reward scheme has been introduced to ensure that regular home reading is celebrated in the classroom. This year we will be particularly focussing on fluency and expression. Children make better progress in these skills with books that they are familiar and comfortable with. Therefore, please try to read each book that is sent home at least twice.
Read Write inc books will be sent home on a weekly basis to reinforce spelling patterns and reading strategies introduced throughout the week during phonic sessions. Please could you encourage your child to practise these at home. This could be in the form of sharing the story with your child, practicing reading, writing and spelling key words found in the book and writing key words into sentences. These will not be tested, but practice is essential.
There will also occasionally be some Maths homework to be completed. This may take the form of a worksheet or a challenge and will reinforce the learning taught throughout the week. However, regular counting and number recognition practice will greatly aid your child's mathematical development.
Other pieces of homework may be sent home on occasions but this will not be every week and will not always be a written piece.
Star of the week
Each week 1 child will be chosen as Star of the week in recognition of their achievements throughout the week. You will be notified if your child has been chosen on Fridays, with celebration assembly to be held the following Thursday. If your child has been chosen, they have the opportunity to bring an item in for show and tell during their special week.
Please note: Only children who are Star of the week will be able to show their special items to the class, so please refrain from allowing children to bring toys and other belongings into school at other times.
We made our CD hover over the table. We needed a cd a bottle top a balloon and glue. We glued the bottle top to the cd and then put the balloon over the lid. We blew the balloon up and the cd hovered over the table.
Today we played head, shoulders, knees and toes. We had to listen to the coach very carefully as sometimes she said ball and we had to grab the ball before our partner. We then had a go at batting again and had to hit the ball as straight as we could through the cones.
Today in cricket Sophie showed us how to hold the cricket bat correctly. Then we had to hit the ball between two cones. We scored points for getting the ball through but it wasn’t that easy as there were others trying to stop it.
Today we had football with Dan. We dribbled the ball. We played King of the ring where you all had a ball and you had to keep your ball but try and kick everyone else’s out of the area. We played a team game where we had to collect as many ball as we could from the middle of the area then pinch them from the other teams. The team with the most balls won. We all really enjoyed it.
Today we were learning to hit the wickets. We had to do overarm bowling. We scored two points if we hit between the red cones and five points if we hit the wickets.
TEAM GB GYMNAST VISIT
Today we were lucky enough to have a visit from Kirsty Way. She is a double mini trampoline European champion. She is also a team silver medalist for the World championship. She broke the world record in the European championship but it was beaten this year by someone from Sweden. We learnt how to do a pike tuck and straddle. We did some team games with her on the playground. She said we were the most flexible children she had ever seen.
Today we were lucky to have a cricket coach come in and teach us all about cricket. We started by learning how to throw and catch the ball. Over the next few weeks we will be building up to be able to play a game of cricket.
Today we went outside and did an experiment. We used a bottle, vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and a balloon. We half filled the bottle with vinegar and put a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda in the balloon. We carefully put the balloon over the top of the bottle and tipped the bicarbonate of soda in. The balloon began to blow up.
Outdoor Ed day.
We started with making our names out of twigs. After break we had hot chocolate and a cookie. Most of us ended up with it over our faces as you can tell from a couple of the photos. We had math challenges after hot chocolate. In the afternoon we had a bug hunt and had a scavenger hunt, looking for things to do with our five senses. A good day of learning and fun.
Today we made our volcano erupt. It was great fun. It made a lot of mess and was really smelly.
Today we made a collage using different materials from the garden area. We made houses, trees and even a boat. We worked with a partner and had some brilliant ideas.
Wednesday 24th April 2019
In maths today we were learning about weight. We weighed ingredients for chocolate chip shortbread. We worked as a team to make them. We creamed the butter and sugar together then added the flour and the chocolate chips. We had great fun making them. We did get a bit messy though. Hopefully they taste as good as the smell.
We dug up the weeds from our garden and then planted carrots and radishes. We watered them and hopefully they will grow and we can eat them.
4th April 2019
We made Pom Pom Easter chicks. Don’t they look cute! Hope you all have a lovely Easter break.
OUT DOOR ED.
We had great fun in the garden area today. Digging, pond dipping and building dens. Some of the wellies were a little big though. We used team work to help each other.
Friday 15th March 2019
COMIC RELIEF DAY.
We dressed up in our pyjamas for Comic relief day. We raised lots of money.
Friday 8th March 2019
We were lucky to have an Author visit us today called Robert Crowther. He taught us how to make a pop-up picture. The teachers shared their favourite books with us in assembly. We dressed up as our favourite book character. We made bookmarks and talked about our favourite book. We had a fantastic day.
We made some amazing rockets by recycling things from home. We made a mess but had great fun. A big thank you for all the materials sent in.
14th February 2019.
We used different materials to see which one would be best to make an umbrella. We decided that plastic would be best as the water didn’t go through.
6th February 2019
In maths we are learning to do repeated addition. We are using different equipment to help. We are then writing it on our whiteboards and working out the answer.
We were using our ball skills to hit the cones then trying to shoot the ball through the basketball hoop.
We are learning about Earth. We found Westonzoyland on the map. We saw our school from an aerial view.
We coloured the different countries in the United Kingdom. We found out that England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland belong to the United Kingdom.
We the curious.
We had so much fun finding out about our wonderful world at We the curious. We saw the planets and the stars in the planetarium. We put an enormous bubble over our heads and even went on a giant hamster wheel. We built a house with massive Lego bricks. There was lots of different activities that were amazing.
